Kelsey Amann

Hello!  I am a senior at MSSU and loving it!  I'm earning my Bachelor of Arts in Theatre with a minor in French.  During my years at Southern, I have served as the Vice-President for Southern Players (Theatre Club), as a member of Phi Eta Sigma, and as the MSSU costume shop/box office student assistant.  I have earned several scholarships here at Southern, including Foreign Laguage Performance Award, A+ Tutoring Scholarship, and Theatre Performance Award.  Some of my most memorable experiences here at MSSU are: The Rocky Horror Picture Show adventures, directing my first written One Act, and studying abroad in Germany and France.

I currently have an overall 3.8 GPA

Some of my favorite quotes that I find really helpful:

1. Don't do it, DO IT!

2. "The minute you settle for less than you deserve, you get even less than you settle for."

3. "It is our choices that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities."

4. "If you have knowledge, let others light their candles in it."

Stephanie Baker

My name is Stephanie Baker.  I'm currently a Junior here at Southern as a Criminal Justice Administration major.  I'm hoping to continue with law school once my undergrad degree is finished.  I'm a non-traditional student that loves the small town atmosphere that Southern offers, but yet still has the International focus that you'd find at a bigger university.  I love to travel, spend time with my family, and my dog Kauffman.  I encourage all incoming students to get to know your campus.  Make the best of these college years, because you'll probably only get this chance once.  For those of you that are non-traditional students entering college for the first time or maybe coming back to finish, let me assure you that Missouri Southern is the right choice.  I'd be glad to help whether it's to point you in the right direction or simply lend an ear.  I look forward to meeting many of you this Fall.

Personal Philosophy on Education: "Intelligence is not a measure of what you know; it is a combination of the discipline it takes to learn and the drive to discover the answers to the unknown."

Renae Brownfield

My initial first year experience was a failure because I didn't make the transition from high school work to college course work.  I worked harder, not smarter that year and experienced difficulty in school for the first time.  I quickly lost motivation when my grades dipped and I didn't return until almost 20 years later.  You can graduate high school with little or no difficulty, but if you don't know the strategies to working smarter, not harder in college, this same thing could happen to you.  MSSU is committed to making this first year transition a success for every student.  For this reason, I am proud to be a small part of your First Year Experience.

Many years later, pieces of my puzzle began to fall into place.  After I achieved some degree of occupational success, retail management lost its appeal and my young family grew.  Lured by discounted travel opportunities, I jumped into Customer Service for American Airlines in DFW.  As an Instructor there, I discovered my love for the learning process.  While teaching entry level computer skills to diverse adult learners during the days, I would tutor my own child when he got home from school.  Through his eyes, I began to understand the learning process in a new and different way.  Before then, I loved school: since then, I love learning.

Now I am here 20 years later, an Elementary Education Senior with an amazing family and support network that will make my graduation day the pinnacle of my life-long learning career.

Philosophy of Education - Immerse yourself in learning... forever.

Levi Butts

Picture
Levi Butts was born on July 30, 1988.  He graduated from Seneca high school in 2007.  Raised on a small farm along with his little sister, Levi was a reserved and shy youth who liked art, animals, and the outdoors.  It was therefore a very strange choice when he enrolled in a junior high competitive speech class.  As unusual as the decision was, it changed the shy boy forever.  He continued his competitive speaking activities throughout his pre-collegiate education.  As his skills evolved, Levi became a confident individual who was able to speak his mind and analyze issues from multiple points of view.  His skills brought him many victories as an active member of both the National Forensic League and The International Thespian Society.  As a four time state qualifier, Levi's events of choice were Original Oratory, Extemporaneous Speaking and Policy Debate in which he was a two time district champion.

Upon graduation Levi left the competitive circuit behind to pursue other academic interests.  With the belief that communication is one of the most essential parts of life, Levi enrolled at MSSU.  He is currently a junior nursing major with minors in Spanish and psychology.  As a member of various organizations, his interests and extracurricular activities are diverse.  Levi is an avid outdoorsman who enjoys helping others.  He also enjoys amateur photography, horseback riding, reading, writing and all form of art especially wire sculpture.  Levi plans to graduate from MSSU with a degree in nursing at which point he will probably pursue another of his many interests.

Marchella Claar

Picture
My name is Marchella Claar.  I am a non-traditional student.  I am a senior majoring in Accounting, with a minor in business.  I grew up in a small town in Belvidere, Illinois.  I graduated from high school in 1988.  I have been married for sixteen years and have a fourteen year old son.  I moved to Joplin in 2003.  I began my college education in the fall of 2005. I am a member of Project Stay and the accounting club.  I enjoy reading, throwing a football with my husband and son, playing games (board and video), watching TV, and just relaxing with my family.  I had a tough time adjusting to college because I had been out for so long, but I have perservered.  My family has supported me 100% and they made my transistion back to school possible.

Philosophy statement: I believe education is very important for a successful career.  Never give up and if you need help don't be afraid or embarrassed to ask for it.  Believe in yourself.

Melanie Curti

Picture
Hej, Hej!!

My name is Melanie Curti and I returned two semesters ago from studying abroad in Sweden for a semester.  I am a senior Art Education K-12 major and International Studies minor, most likely to be a 5th year senior.  Studying abroad made my college experience twice as good, hence the extra year I will spend at MSSU giving back to the community.  When asked where I'm from in the past I struggled with the answer, I usually said I was from Wisconsin though I was born in Ohio.  But now I claim that I am from Carthage, MO: I guesss you could say that I've grown up a bit over the last three years.  I was recognized on the Dean's list as a freshman and I am involved with Art League on campus.  I split my time between my internship at Spiva Gallery for the Arts, in the classroom/homework, refereeing soccer and family/friends.  After graduation I plan on finding a job teaching art and using my summers and Christmas breaks to travel abroad, possibly in a few years joing the Peace Corps.

My interests include; photography (analog and digital), art, racing from one stoplight to the next,

Travis Curtice

Picture
Travis Curtice is an International Studies major and French minor.  Travis is married to Kaitlin Brianna.  Together they enjoy music, poetry, playing with their husky, Sam and just living life together.

His collegiate experience has been an ever changing and constantly evolving process.  He began college at the age of sixteen and transferred from three different schools, including the University of Missouri, Columbia.  His major changed as often as his colleges ranging from pre-medicinal chemistry to philosophy.  He found that both his intellectual curiosity and desire for adventurous travel compelled him into the field of international studies.

Travis has travelled to Croatia, Mexico, Bosnia, and Uganda.  In Bosnia he worked teaching English to eighth graders from the rural communities surrounding Zenica, as well as, partnering with local village leaders from war-torn areas in home reconstruction projects.  In Uganda he interned with Post-Trauma counselors in the Acholi IDP (Internally Displaced Peoples) refugee camps and worked with 33 orphans at the House of Hope Orphanage Gulu, Uganda.  Travis is currently applying for the MCCaleb Peace Initiative Grant through MSSU to return to Gulu and research the affects of the war and how the process of reconciliation can bring a lasting peace to Uganda.

What little time Travis has not studying he enjoys rock climbing, cycling and racquetball.

Personal Philosophy on Education:  "I believe that through education, the genuine pursuit of knowledge and wisdom, the door of understanding opens the mind to a new world tearing down bias and prejudice and building a future of hope for tomorrow's world."

Lisa Dickson

Picture
My name is Lisa Dickson.  I am a senior at MSSU with a major in Psychology and a minor in Sociology.  I am a member of Phi Eta Sigma, Psi-Chi, and Psychology club.  I plan to graduate in December 2009.  After graduation I will be taking a few months off and then I plan to attend MSU here on MSSU's campus to complete my Master in Social Work.  My plans are to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and do individual & group therapy.  I became a peer mentor for the First-year Experience program because I hope to help incoming freshman to better handle the confusion they may be confronted with during the transition to college life.

I like to spend time with my husband whom I have been with since Janurary 1999.  We haev 3 dogs and 1 cat and at this point no children-yet.  I enjoy reading and being with friends.  I tend to keep myself pretty busy with school but am always willing to meet new people and make new friends.

Personal Philosophy on Education:  Anything is possible through enough hard work and perserverance.  Investing in one's education can be very costly; however, the rewards are well worth the cost.

Nathan Duncan

Jeanna Feldmann

Picture
Jeanna Feldmann is currently a junior and varsity athlete at Missouri Southern State University.  Off the volleyball court, she is majoring in biochemistry-forensic science with a minor in crime scene investigation.  After graduation, she plans to pursue a master's degree in forensic science at the University of Alabama-Birmingham.

The youngest in a family of seven, Jeanna was born and raised in a small town outside of St. Louis.  She graduated with honors from St. Francis Borgia Regional High School in 2007.  She has always been an advocate of traveling and volunteering and hopes to, one day, be able to travel to Africa with a mission group oriented towards building youth education.

Jeanne's spare time outside of school and volleyball typically consists of hanging with friends, watching movies, and listening to music.  Her personal philosophy in life is to treat every day as if it were the last.

Personal Philosophy on Education: I believe one should never limit oneself to the amount or range of knowledge one can obtain.  Most learning occurs outside the classroom and the only obstacle standing in the way of one's learning is oneself.  "Education is not merely a means for earning a living or an instrument for the acquistion of wealth.  It is an initiation into life of spirit, a training of the human soul in the pursuit of truth and the practice of virtue" - Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit

Samantha Helton

School and work tend to keep my schedule full, but in my free time I like to spend time with my friends and family.  I enjoy going to any sporting events at Southern and cheering for the Lions.  I also enjoy attending the plays put on by the theatre department.

My experience at MSSU has been a positive one and I am looking forward to the rest of my university experience.  I hope by being a peer mentor that I can help my students also enjoy their time at Southern!

George Keeler

Picture
On August 17th, 1972 in Bethlehem Pa. I was born.  The blue collar city featured the second larges steel mill in the world at the time.  My name is George Keeler but everyone calls me Geo.  I was the youngest of six kids, four boys, two girls.  It's intersting that both my parents were sixth children as well.  My Dad worked at the local steel mill, and my Mom was a stay at home type.  I moved to Missouri the first time when I was 13 but moved away quite regularly.  I have been back for a couple years for family.  I am married and have a ten year old daughter that's the sunshine of my life.  I am a junior and have only attended MSSU.  My major is Biology with an emplasis on conservation/ecology.  Eventually I hope to work for the National Park Service and travel to various locations with them.  This summer I am starting an internship with the NPS at George Washington Carver Historical site.  I have a History minor because that's really my favorite subject, though as a career I would rather work outdoors.

I work part-time here at the university in the greenhouse and collecting samples for the General Biology and Botany labs.  I am also a member of the Biology Club.  Nature has always inspired me to be a better person and learn as much as I could to protect it.  For that reason I always enjoy hiking and camping and all types of outdoor activities.

I hope that I can help people to relax and enjoy their college experience.  I know that the first year is tough, but with some organization, practice and planning everybody can have a lovely first year.  I look forward to helping future students with the transition to a positive collegiate frame of mind.

Nyssa Kirkpatrick

Picture
Nyssa Kirkpatrick is currently working on majoring in Elementary Education.  Although she is a senior, she considers herself a sophomore because of her recent decision to change majors.  She is a small town girl who grew up in Galesburg, KS, and will always prefer the country to the city.  Nyssa was married this past June and hopes to someday be a foster parent, as well as have a few kids of their own.  Nyssa is a member of Alpha Chi.

"I have really had a wonderful college experience because of the guidance I had.  I want to be able to help the oncoming students find out about all of the opportunities that area available for them out there, as well as the help they can get and the organizations they can be a part of."

Personal Philosophy of Education: I believe 100% that knowledge is power.  I think this is a power that should be spread equally to all people, that everyone would have the chance and resources to partake.  If they do not, then let's go out and teach them!  In return, they will teach us many things as well.

Brooke Lairmore

Picture
My name is Brooke Lairmore and I am a junior from Ozark, Missouri.  I am a Mass Communications major, and I will graduate in the spring of 2011.  I have lots of Lion spirit!  This will be my third year on the MSSU cheerleading squad.  I really enjoy cheering the Lions on at all home football and basketball games.  MOSO is the best of both worlds for me.  It is a college experience that is not too far from home.  My family and friends are very important to me, and I spend most of my free time hanging out with them.  I am definitely a people person, and I hope to someday work on a morning show.  My goal is to help other students have a great first year, just like I was so lucky to experience.

Education Philosophy: You can not go back in time.  At the end of the day if you can say you have done your very best, then you can be happy with any outcome.  Getting involved van only make your college experience better and a positive attitude is one of the most important things to possess.

Howie Lindeman

Picture
I am a first generation non-traditional student.  After originally registering at what was the Missouri Southern State College in 1977, I was distracted by life and did not attend my first class until 2006.  Having enjoyed a successful career, it was time to fulfill my lifetime goal of a degree and once I overcame the incredible shock associated with re-entry, education has again become an important element of my life.  In May, of 2008, I traveled with MSSU to Italy where we visited Rome, Sorrento, Pompeii, Florence, and Capri; this was certainly Southern's International Mission at its finest!  Now a junior, I am able to see impending success and planning my post-secondary journey.  I am the father of nine children in a blended family, an English major, and am active in Project Stay and Student Senate.

My philosophy is simple: It must be done.  As successful as I was in business, I was equally unprepared to become a 48 year-old college freshman.  The challanges of transition from the World to the halls of academia were enormous, but not optional; it was my responsibility to establish the expectation of collegiate success.  It simply must be done.

Andrea Monroe

Picture
Hello! My name is Andrea.  I am a Junior, majoring in Dental Hygiene.  I am also working on getting my Bachelor's in Health Science.  Here at MSSU I am active in SADHA (Student American Dental Hygiene Association), ADHA (American Dental Hygiene Association), and Phi Eta Sigma (an academic society), and now a mentor!  I am a graduate from East Newton High School, a little hig school in the middle of a field.  I grew up in Granby, Missouri and have no brothers or sisters.  I am a country girl at heart and I love to travel the world!

My Personal Philosophy on Education is that education is what you make it.  You have to put the time and effort into your education to get the best out of it that you can.

Ashlee Olson

Picture
The first question I would like to answer is, “what have I experienced so far?”  I doubt I have experienced a whole lot, but what I have, has changed my life for the better.  It was my summer before my freshman year in college; I got the chance to travel over to Europe.  I was so excited because it was a once in a life time opportunity!  I went with some fellow student and some other students from Poway High School in California.  Europe was new to me as it was to the others in the group; we all left with several memories that are so close to being the same, but totally different because everyone had their own in take.  I would have to say my two favorite memories come from when I was in Switzerland and Spain.  When in Switzerland a good size group of us decided to jump into a glacier pond, yes a pond that was formed by all the melted ice from the mountains around us.  Once you jumped into this pond it didn’t matter how long you were in, you could be in for two seconds and your body would still go numb!  Now once in Spain, I fought a one year old bull.  It was absolutely amazing to be in the arena because it was fun to experience one of the many traditions in the Spanish culture.  When I chose to do these two things, I realized I can face a fear or enjoy something crazy when I have my friends backing me up.  I left this trip with a group of peers I will never forget!  Therefore, I would say this was a good experience that I will always remember in my past.

Now the “who am I” question is going to be a little harder to answer, but I will tell you what I have so far.  I am a young lady who will become a woman some day, but not now.  I put it that way because there is so much I need and want to learn before I consider myself a woman.  So I believe in time I will get there!  Besides a young lady, I am many other things.  I am a college student, I am a friend to many, I am a dreamer, and most of all I am the one and only non famous Ashlee Olson.  There are just some details about me that make up who I am so far.  For one, I have only lived for 19 years and that is not enough time to define who I am.  Second, how can you know who you are if your life is always changing with the decisions you make everyday.  Therefore, at this present time I am just a girl trying to find her self through living her life.

“What am I looking for,” well there are so many things, but the main one in a college education.  That is why I am here in Joplin at Missouri Southern State University.  When I was in high school, I didn’t know if this University was what I was looking for, however I had a good feeling when I went on my campus visit.  Therefore, here I am!  I am glad I choose this college because it has so much to offer in many educational fields.  I guess you can say MSSU is a well rounded University!  Looking back on my freshman year of college, I have to say I found a life I didn’t know I was looking for.  Saying that is a good thing because I love where I’m at, plus the education I have received in the past year.  I have faith that the education I will continue to get will be the best because it will be the same education that the college will want me to pass on through my major!  For that reason, the future is looking bright as I keep traveling down this road of higher learning.

I have given you some information on my past experiences.  Yes, some were fun and some were not, but that is what makes my life history unique. I thought knowing my past might help identify who I am now, but it hasn’t’.  I don’t think I will know who I truly am until am about to look death in the eyes.  Not going to lie I am scared of death, but I am not going to let that fear compromise my future.  I have so many things I am looking forward too, so I am going to live my life and keep setting long term goals!

Chelsea Prettyman

Picture
My name is Chelsea Prettyman, and I am a senior at Missouri Southern.  I am a theatre major and have been involved in many of the productions both on stage and back stage here at MSSU.  I am a member of the Honors Program, Omicron Delta Kappa, Alpha Chi, and am the secretary of Southern Players.  I also have participated in many of the choirs at Southern.  After graduation, I hope to get my Masters of Fine Arts in Acting and eventually become a college professor.  Initially, I came to MSSU because of its international mission.  I encourage every student to study abroad; it is a life changing experience!  I myself have traveled to London and would not trade that experience for the world.

Pholosophy on Education - Education is all about application.  To truly learn something means to apply it to one's life; anything less falls away.

Patricia Robinson

Picture
My name is Patricia Robinson, and I'm a junior Mass Communications major at Missouri Southern.  I grew up in Lockwood, MO, which is a small farming community about 50 miles from Joplin.  I chose Missouri Southern because it is close to home, affordable, and offers programs I am interested in.

I am the Assistant Online Editor for The Chart.  Working for the newspaper has developed my writing skills and guides me toward my career goals.  I'm still deciding what I want to do with my life, but I'll most likely go into copy editing or event planning.  By working for The Chart I've been able to learn journalistic style, copy editing, page design, and other skills that will be helpful in the future.

I have a Shetland Sheepdog named Little Man.  I got him a few weeks before Christmas.  He was tiny when I got him, but he's growning up quick and is very fluffy.

I love to travel.  I've been to Canada, Mexico, Jamaica, and several states.  Seattle, Galveston, and Mexico are my favorite palaces, so far.

My pastimes include: traveling, reading, watching TV, going to Oasis salon, eating sushi, going to Fayetteville, shopping, drinking coffee, cooking, hanging out with my family/friends and boyfriend, playing with my dog, and researching career options.

I have two sisters, and they're my best friends.  We always have fun together.  We shop and get lunch/dinner together whenever we can.  I live with my older sister and her husband in Joplin.  My little sister still lives at home with my parents and goes to school in Lockwood.

Kyle Schrage

Picture
Kyle Schrage is the son of Mike and Karolyn Schrage and has two older sisters, Karissa and Kathryn.  Kyle lived with his family in Kenya from birth through his freshman year in High School.  Mike and Karolyn served as missionaries in Kenya for twenty years.  Their outreach services included: teaching improved farming techniques to nomadic tribes, opening and operating an orphanage, working to develop medical clinics with maternal child health education and develop church leadership.  While Kyle was raised in a foreign country, his parents made every effort to pass on and practice American traditions.  American holidays were celebrated, instilling an immense sense of pride in their family as American citizens.  English was spoken in the home and at the American school where Kyle received his education.  Kyle learned to speak Kiswahili during his childhood.  While fluent in Kiswahili at a younger age, retention has been difficult while living away from daily use.

As a freshman in High School, Kyle moved to Carl Junction, Missouri.  This region of the USA located Kyle closer to his extended family with his sisters located in the USA for university.  The family was geographically more connected.  After graduating from high school Kyle went to Missouri Southern State University with he played basketball.  He redshirted his first year and began pursuing a degree in Criminal Justice.  Kyle is now a junior and continues to enjoy his field of study and playing basketball.

Shaye Shilhanek

Picture
Hello, I'm Shaye Shilhanek, a non-traditional student majoring in General Studies with an emphasis in Business and Education.  I plan to graduate in July 2009 and will be pursuing my teaching degree through Missouri State in Springfield.  I hope to obtain my Post Baccalaureate Degree in Business Education by May 2011.  I would like to teach high school business when I graduate.  I work as a secretary at Webb City High School.  I am married and have three children and love watching their activities.  I returned to MSSU in the summer of 2008 to finish my degree in hopes of fulfulling a dream of becoming a teacher.  I will be participating in the Study Abroad Program through the Business Department in May 2009 traveling to Germany and I am really looking forward to this opportunity!

I am so excited to be a part of the MIDS 100 class.  I remember how intimidating my first year of college was.  I couldn't believe all my new found FREEDOM!  I spent my time enjoying the fact that I could miss class and no one was "checking up".  It totally reflected in my grades that first semester!  It was a HUGE wake up call.  Even though there wasn't someone saying "turn in this" and "turn in that" and making sure I ws in every class, I should have been more responsible.  Everything had come so easy to me in high school.  What?  I actually have to study now?  Wow!  What a new concept this was to me.   Succeeding in college takes a lot of patience, hard work and persisitence.

Personal Philosophy on Education:  Never give up!  Life may throw you some curve balls (and it most likely will); but keep your educational dreams alive and keep pushing towards your goal.  If you have a setback... get back up and try again!  Ask for help!  So many resources are available to help you succeed!

My name is Irene Zimmerling and I was born in Gasalkent, Uzbekistan on December 5, 1985.  I lived in Gasalkent until I was 5 years old.  After my family moved to Germany in 1990, I went to school for 13 years and completed a two-year-apprenticeship as draftsperson.  In July 2007 I was accepted for a student exchange visa to the USA.  Here in Missouri, I took two semesters of drafting classes at Crowder College.  In July 2008 I switched my major to a language and started taking classes at MSSU.  During my first semester at MSSU I completed a 3-month internship as Assistant Translator at Leggett & Platt in Carthage.  Currently, I am teaching language outreach classes and mentoring in a MIDS class.

I like to help people.  I am convinced that everybody who is determined to reach a goal is capable of reaching the goal, as long as the goal is realistic.  I am also convinced that everybody needs help at some point and time in life, and that asking for help is not to be confused with a sign of ignorance, but to be considered as a sign of intelligence.
