Fall 2009 Peer Mentors
Kelsey Amann
I currently have an overall 3.8 GPA
Some of my favorite quotes that I find really helpful:
1. Don't do it, DO IT!
2. "The minute you settle for less than you deserve, you get even less than you settle for."
3. "It is our choices that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities."
4. "If you have knowledge, let others light their candles in it."
Stephanie Baker
My name is Stephanie Baker. I'm currently a Junior here at Southern as a Criminal Justice Administration major. I'm hoping to continue with law school once my undergrad degree is finished. I'm a non-traditional student that loves the small town atmosphere that Southern offers, but yet still has the International focus that you'd find at a bigger university. I love to travel, spend time with my family, and my dog Kauffman. I encourage all incoming students to get to know your campus. Make the best of these college years, because you'll probably only get this chance once. For those of you that are non-traditional students entering college for the first time or maybe coming back to finish, let me assure you that Missouri Southern is the right choice. I'd be glad to help whether it's to point you in the right direction or simply lend an ear. I look forward to meeting many of you this Fall.
Sarah Blacksher
Sarah has a background in theater, music, and greek life. Since coming to Southern in 2007, she has become involved in the Baptist Student Union, holding the offices of President and Secretary for History Club, and Phi Theta Kappa honor society. She frequently substitute sings and plays percussion and keyboards for the worship band at her church.
Sarah's intersts include music, history, outdoor activities, watching professional sports, especially the St. Louis Cardinals, and travel. Sarah visited San Jose, Costa Rica this summer, and would like to continue volunteering in Latin America. Sarah's career goals include graduate school and a career in teaching.
Kristina Blake
Kristina is a member of the Psychology club and the Alpha Chi and Psi Chi National Honor Societies.
Kristina grew up in a small town in northern Iowa. She has traveled to many states within the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and to the islands of Bora Bora and Tahiti in French Polynesia. International travel is important to Kristina as she feels that exposure to different cultures is not only stimulating, but also brings you a knowledge of life that you can not learn from a book.
Personal Philosophy on Education: "Intelligence is not a measure of what you know; it is a combination of the discipline it takes to learn and the drive to discover the answers to the unknown."
Patrick Britt
Personal Philosophy on Education: Make the most of your Collegiate experience, there is so much available for you to learn.
Renae Brownfield
Many years later, pieces of my puzzle began to fall into place. After I achieved some degree of occupational success, retail management lost its appeal and my young family grew. Lured by discounted travel opportunities, I jumped into Customer Service for American Airlines in DFW. As an Instructor there, I discovered my love for the learning process. While teaching entry level computer skills to diverse adult learners during the days, I would tutor my own child when he got home from school. Through his eyes, I began to understand the learning process in a new and different way. Before then, I loved school: since then, I love learning.
Now I am here 20 years later, an Elementary Education Senior with an amazing family and support network that will make my graduation day the pinnacle of my life-long learning career.
Philosophy of Education - Immerse yourself in learning... forever.
Levi Butts
Upon graduation Levi left the competitive circuit behind to pursue other academic interests. With the belief that communication is one of the most essential parts of life, Levi enrolled at MSSU. He is currently a junior nursing major with minors in Spanish and psychology. As a member of various organizations, his interests and extracurricular activities are diverse. Levi is an avid outdoorsman who enjoys helping others. He also enjoys amateur photography, horseback riding, reading, writing and all form of art especially wire sculpture. Levi plans to graduate from MSSU with a degree in nursing at which point he will probably pursue another of his many interests.

My Philosophy of Education: People sometimes take education for granted but it is an important part of your whole life.
Marchella Claar
Philosophy statement: I believe education is very important for a successful career. Never give up and if you need help don't be afraid or embarrassed to ask for it. Believe in yourself.
Donald Clark
In Clinton, Oklahoma, on February 27, 1962, Donald Clark was born to a carpenter and nursing administrator. He is the oldest of four children who grew up in the small town of Watonga, Oklahoma. He is the father of five children, with three grandchildren.
Donald graduated from Watonga high school in 1980 and spent eight years in the Oklahoma Army National Guard serving as Supply Sergeant. Years later, he graduated from Crowder College with an Associate of Arts degree in General Studies in 2007 and is currently attending Missouri Southern State University, pursuing a degree in International Studies.
Donald's interests include: woodworking, outdoor activities, and coaching youth softball when the children were younger. He is active in his church, both as president of the church and working with the youth by coordinating summer camps and mission trips. He has traveled to Senegal West Africa and also to Mexico.
Personal Philosophy of Education: I believe that education is what you make of it, and everyone is entitled to persue as much education as they desire.
Melanie Curti
My name is Melanie Curti and I returned two semesters ago from studying abroad in Sweden for a semester. I am a senior Art Education K-12 major and International Studies minor, most likely to be a 5th year senior. Studying abroad made my college experience twice as good, hence the extra year I will spend at MSSU giving back to the community. When asked where I'm from in the past I struggled with the answer, I usually said I was from Wisconsin though I was born in Ohio. But now I claim that I am from Carthage, MO: I guesss you could say that I've grown up a bit over the last three years. I was recognized on the Dean's list as a freshman and I am involved with Art League on campus. I split my time between my internship at Spiva Gallery for the Arts, in the classroom/homework, refereeing soccer and family/friends. After graduation I plan on finding a job teaching art and using my summers and Christmas breaks to travel abroad, possibly in a few years joing the Peace Corps.
My interests include; photography (analog and digital), art, racing from one stoplight to the next,
Travis Curtice
His collegiate experience has been an ever changing and constantly evolving process. He began college at the age of sixteen and transferred from three different schools, including the University of Missouri, Columbia. His major changed as often as his colleges ranging from pre-medicinal chemistry to philosophy. He found that both his intellectual curiosity and desire for adventurous travel compelled him into the field of international studies.
Travis has travelled to Croatia, Mexico, Bosnia, and Uganda. In Bosnia he worked teaching English to eighth graders from the rural communities surrounding Zenica, as well as, partnering with local village leaders from war-torn areas in home reconstruction projects. In Uganda he interned with Post-Trauma counselors in the Acholi IDP (Internally Displaced Peoples) refugee camps and worked with 33 orphans at the House of Hope Orphanage Gulu, Uganda. Travis is currently applying for the MCCaleb Peace Initiative Grant through MSSU to return to Gulu and research the affects of the war and how the process of reconciliation can bring a lasting peace to Uganda.
What little time Travis has not studying he enjoys rock climbing, cycling and racquetball.
Personal Philosophy on Education: "I believe that through education, the genuine pursuit of knowledge and wisdom, the door of understanding opens the mind to a new world tearing down bias and prejudice and building a future of hope for tomorrow's world."
Lisa Dickson
I like to spend time with my husband whom I have been with since Janurary 1999. We haev 3 dogs and 1 cat and at this point no children-yet. I enjoy reading and being with friends. I tend to keep myself pretty busy with school but am always willing to meet new people and make new friends.
Personal Philosophy on Education: Anything is possible through enough hard work and perserverance. Investing in one's education can be very costly; however, the rewards are well worth the cost.
Nathan Duncan
Jeanna Feldmann
The youngest in a family of seven, Jeanna was born and raised in a small town outside of St. Louis. She graduated with honors from St. Francis Borgia Regional High School in 2007. She has always been an advocate of traveling and volunteering and hopes to, one day, be able to travel to Africa with a mission group oriented towards building youth education.
Jeanne's spare time outside of school and volleyball typically consists of hanging with friends, watching movies, and listening to music. Her personal philosophy in life is to treat every day as if it were the last.
Personal Philosophy on Education: I believe one should never limit oneself to the amount or range of knowledge one can obtain. Most learning occurs outside the classroom and the only obstacle standing in the way of one's learning is oneself. "Education is not merely a means for earning a living or an instrument for the acquistion of wealth. It is an initiation into life of spirit, a training of the human soul in the pursuit of truth and the practice of virtue" - Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit
Anna Hawes
Education Philosophy - I believe that a good education is valuable because not only can it get you a better job in the future, but it also helps us grow.
Becky Head
I am really enjoying my time here at MSSU and I like to keep myself busy by participating in many campus organizations. I am a member of Project Stay, Spanish Club, and International Business Club where I am the Treasurer. I am also a member of the MOSO week squad. Now I am proud to take on the role of peer mentor. Our University's international mission has helped keep me busy during the summers by allowing me the privilege of traveling to China and Guatemala. I know that all of these experiences will help me accomplish all of my goals and make all of my dreams come true.
Samantha Helton
Sarah Honey
School and work tend to keep my schedule full, but in my free time I like to spend time with my friends and family. I enjoy going to any sporting events at Southern and cheering for the Lions. I also enjoy attending the plays put on by the theatre department.
My experience at MSSU has been a positive one and I am looking forward to the rest of my university experience. I hope by being a peer mentor that I can help my students also enjoy their time at Southern!
Personal Philosophy on Education: "Every job is a self-portrait of the person who did it. Autograph your work with greatness." - Anonymous
George Keeler
I work part-time here at the university in the greenhouse and collecting samples for the General Biology and Botany labs. I am also a member of the Biology Club. Nature has always inspired me to be a better person and learn as much as I could to protect it. For that reason I always enjoy hiking and camping and all types of outdoor activities.
I hope that I can help people to relax and enjoy their college experience. I know that the first year is tough, but with some organization, practice and planning everybody can have a lovely first year. I look forward to helping future students with the transition to a positive collegiate frame of mind.
Nyssa Kirkpatrick
"I have really had a wonderful college experience because of the guidance I had. I want to be able to help the oncoming students find out about all of the opportunities that area available for them out there, as well as the help they can get and the organizations they can be a part of."
Personal Philosophy of Education: I believe 100% that knowledge is power. I think this is a power that should be spread equally to all people, that everyone would have the chance and resources to partake. If they do not, then let's go out and teach them! In return, they will teach us many things as well.
Brooke Lairmore
Education Philosophy: You can not go back in time. At the end of the day if you can say you have done your very best, then you can be happy with any outcome. Getting involved van only make your college experience better and a positive attitude is one of the most important things to possess.
Howie Lindeman
My philosophy is simple: It must be done. As successful as I was in business, I was equally unprepared to become a 48 year-old college freshman. The challanges of transition from the World to the halls of academia were enormous, but not optional; it was my responsibility to establish the expectation of collegiate success. It simply must be done.
Andrea Monroe
My Personal Philosophy on Education is that education is what you make it. You have to put the time and effort into your education to get the best out of it that you can.
Ashlee Olson
Now the “who am I” question is going to be a little harder to answer, but I will tell you what I have so far. I am a young lady who will become a woman some day, but not now. I put it that way because there is so much I need and want to learn before I consider myself a woman. So I believe in time I will get there! Besides a young lady, I am many other things. I am a college student, I am a friend to many, I am a dreamer, and most of all I am the one and only non famous Ashlee Olson. There are just some details about me that make up who I am so far. For one, I have only lived for 19 years and that is not enough time to define who I am. Second, how can you know who you are if your life is always changing with the decisions you make everyday. Therefore, at this present time I am just a girl trying to find her self through living her life.
“What am I looking for,” well there are so many things, but the main one in a college education. That is why I am here in Joplin at Missouri Southern State University. When I was in high school, I didn’t know if this University was what I was looking for, however I had a good feeling when I went on my campus visit. Therefore, here I am! I am glad I choose this college because it has so much to offer in many educational fields. I guess you can say MSSU is a well rounded University! Looking back on my freshman year of college, I have to say I found a life I didn’t know I was looking for. Saying that is a good thing because I love where I’m at, plus the education I have received in the past year. I have faith that the education I will continue to get will be the best because it will be the same education that the college will want me to pass on through my major! For that reason, the future is looking bright as I keep traveling down this road of higher learning.
I have given you some information on my past experiences. Yes, some were fun and some were not, but that is what makes my life history unique. I thought knowing my past might help identify who I am now, but it hasn’t’. I don’t think I will know who I truly am until am about to look death in the eyes. Not going to lie I am scared of death, but I am not going to let that fear compromise my future. I have so many things I am looking forward too, so I am going to live my life and keep setting long term goals!

Pholosophy on Education - Education is all about application. To truly learn something means to apply it to one's life; anything less falls away.
Patricia Robinson
I am the Assistant Online Editor for The Chart. Working for the newspaper has developed my writing skills and guides me toward my career goals. I'm still deciding what I want to do with my life, but I'll most likely go into copy editing or event planning. By working for The Chart I've been able to learn journalistic style, copy editing, page design, and other skills that will be helpful in the future.
I have a Shetland Sheepdog named Little Man. I got him a few weeks before Christmas. He was tiny when I got him, but he's growning up quick and is very fluffy.
I love to travel. I've been to Canada, Mexico, Jamaica, and several states. Seattle, Galveston, and Mexico are my favorite palaces, so far.
My pastimes include: traveling, reading, watching TV, going to Oasis salon, eating sushi, going to Fayetteville, shopping, drinking coffee, cooking, hanging out with my family/friends and boyfriend, playing with my dog, and researching career options.
I have two sisters, and they're my best friends. We always have fun together. We shop and get lunch/dinner together whenever we can. I live with my older sister and her husband in Joplin. My little sister still lives at home with my parents and goes to school in Lockwood.
Kyle Schrage
As a freshman in High School, Kyle moved to Carl Junction, Missouri. This region of the USA located Kyle closer to his extended family with his sisters located in the USA for university. The family was geographically more connected. After graduating from high school Kyle went to Missouri Southern State University with he played basketball. He redshirted his first year and began pursuing a degree in Criminal Justice. Kyle is now a junior and continues to enjoy his field of study and playing basketball.

I am so excited to be a part of the MIDS 100 class. I remember how intimidating my first year of college was. I couldn't believe all my new found FREEDOM! I spent my time enjoying the fact that I could miss class and no one was "checking up". It totally reflected in my grades that first semester! It was a HUGE wake up call. Even though there wasn't someone saying "turn in this" and "turn in that" and making sure I ws in every class, I should have been more responsible. Everything had come so easy to me in high school. What? I actually have to study now? Wow! What a new concept this was to me. Succeeding in college takes a lot of patience, hard work and persisitence.
Personal Philosophy on Education: Never give up! Life may throw you some curve balls (and it most likely will); but keep your educational dreams alive and keep pushing towards your goal. If you have a setback... get back up and try again! Ask for help! So many resources are available to help you succeed!

Personal Philosophy of Education: College is such a lift altering journey- opening your mind will shed such light into the experiences you create, make and achieve along the way!
Irene Zimmerling
I like to help people. I am convinced that everybody who is determined to reach a goal is capable of reaching the goal, as long as the goal is realistic. I am also convinced that everybody needs help at some point and time in life, and that asking for help is not to be confused with a sign of ignorance, but to be considered as a sign of intelligence.
